A Study on Android Smartphones

Every coin has two sides. As the fast-growing of Android users, issues and complaints raise up. Before writing this article, we proceed with an interview among 10,000 Android users with middle-end devices ($200-$350) in China, to share opinions on their device. Here's what we found:

We can see that the most part of the troubles on Android is the lagging issue. In this case, we also included the question of how long did they use when the devices become lag:

Only a small part of the devices encountered the lagging issue at the very beginning (<6 months). Most of which are growing with the time of using.

Good study, but is there any way to get the issue sorted out? How could we make our Android device runs faster, instead of spending money to get another one? Let's move forward.

Ways to Boost the Speed of Your Device

There are hundreds of methods to deal with the lagging issue, which proved to be useful or useless according to different circumstances. However, here I'd like to highlight 6 ways, for especially Android devices which have been used for 1-2 years, which turned out to be helpful according to my own experience.

1. Uninstall the apps that never use

When it comes to mobile apps, the more is never the better. Although there are millions of free apps out there, it never needs to install all of them. Too many apps in the device are just dead weight to the hardware, works like a Parachute at the bottom of an airplane, dragging down the speed of the system.

How could we distinguish the seldom-used apps from all apps installed on our smartphone? Thanks for the technology, there're several apps help you do this which could be found in Google Play. Many of the manufacturers have also pre-installed this kind of cleaning apps in the smartphone, to help you find out which apps are unnecessary according to the open times.

Just use them.

2. Transfer & Backup Media Resources

After 1 year's accompanying, I bet your smartphone has stored at least 1,000 photos or videos inside, as equipped with a perfect worked camera. Trust me, if you check the storage of the folder with these media resources occupied, the number would be unbelievable. Like I mentioned in point 1, it's a vital element to cause the lagging.

I'd like to say that, this is the easiest matter to resolve, which only requires patience. By uploading all the stuff to cloud disks or transfer them to your PC will get it done.

So easy.

3. Keep the Useful Widgets Only

Widget is a very useful tool for us. It creates shortcuts to lots of apps that make our life more convenient. However, too many widgets can slow down the speed of the device, as it takes RAM to keep running on the desktop.

To lighten it, just keep 3-5 widgets according to the RAM of your device, and cleanse all others that rarely use.

4. Clean the RAM Rapidly

There are several occasions we use other one's smartphone temporary. One of my friends asked me to check his device since it was running too slow. When I called out the background, I was shocked that almost 40 Apps were running there.

There are several apps that have permission to run in the background, and this, takes over tons of our RAM. If you forgot to shut it down, less RAM would be available for the current app you are using which causes it lagging or forced close. So please make it a habit to shut down the app in the background after you've completed using it, and clean the RAM rapidly during the day.

5. Restart

It seems like nearly all of us haven't restarted our smartphones for a long time. Although that's not a big deal, I have to say, that, reboot the device DO HELP with solving plenty of glitches related to the performance.

Think about what you do when your PC stocks, what you do when there's an error on your TV, restart right? So it's exactly the same on smartphones. To restart the device every day when you're idle is really worth to try.

6. Factory Reset

When all of the methods above don't work very well, the factory reset will provide you with a brand new system. Of course, don't forget to back up all the data before doing this, or it's kindly of screwed up to re-install all the apps one by one. It's the last attempting to solve the lagging issue thoroughly.

If you've been using your smartphone for a long time, factory reset will surely surprise you.

Bonus Strategy: Developer Options

Tired of being a user? Let's do it as a developer!

Nearly all of the Android smartphones have access to the developer options. It doesn't mean to root the device, but could make modifications to some basic settings.

Check out the following steps:

a. Enter the developer options and turn it out

b. Find the "Background Process Limit" option

normally, it would be set as "Standard limit", but we could adjust it to 1-4 processes base on needs.

c. Find the "Window animation scale", "Transition animation scale" and "Animator duration scale"

set all of them to .5x, which will decrease the pressure of the system, save the room for running programs and make our Android devices run faster.

These are methods to make your Android smartphone run smoothly without having to root. Give it a try and let me know which one works better on your device.
